Duplicate a template

Duplicating templates requires specific permissions depending on the source of the original file. To duplicate a template from a shared template space, you must have rights to Manage templates within that specific space. Ensure you have the necessary access enabled before proceeding, or contact your company administrator for help.

Access the template library

To begin the duplication process, you need to access the templates menu where your private, shared, and pre-made Contractbook templates are stored.

  • Click on the Templates tab from the main navigation menu at the top of the screen.

  • Click the blue New template button located in the top right corner.

  • Select the option to Duplicate a template from the dropdown menu.

Select a template source

You can create a duplicate version of a template from three primary sources.

  • Use the left-hand Templates sidebar in the “Duplicate template” modal to choose the source:

    • My templates: Contains all private templates you have created.

    • Shared templates: Includes templates from shared template spaces where you have at least “Manage templates” permission.

    • Contractbook library: A collection of 140+ professional, pre-made templates provided to you by Contractbook.

  • Use the Search field in the top right of the modal to find a specific template by name.

  • Select the Language or Sort by filters to narrow down your results:

Finalize the duplication

Before creating the template duplicate, you can verify the content to ensure it is the correct one.

  • Hover over a template name from the list and click Preview.

  • Review the template in the preview window to confirm details like party structures and body text.

  • If you realize it is the wrong version, click Close in the bottom left corner to return to the list.

  • Click the blue Use this template button to confirm and generate your new editable copy.

  • The system will automatically open the new duplicated template in the editor, allowing you to rename it and begin making edits.

  • If you do not need to review the template first, click on the template name from the list to directly create your duplicated version.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I duplicate a template from a Shared space I only have "View" access to?

No. To duplicate a template from a shared template space, you must have the “Manage templates” permission level for that specific source space. If you cannot see the template in your list, contact the template space creator (or any other user with access to the template space) to upgrade your shared permissions.

  • Will the duplicated template include the original's automations?

When you duplicate a template, you create a fresh version of the document body and data fields. You will need to further configure any specific Automations for the new template copy using the sidebar in the editor.

  • How do I change the name of the duplicated template?

Once the duplication is complete and the template opens, click on the Document title field at the top of the editor. You can remove the copy reference name and type a new title.
